Scott and Frankie Brown
We met in September of 2013. My colleauge was insistent on setting me up with her cousin who just moved back to town. I had moved to this small town as a single adult and was starting my third year of teaching. I had been set up with numerous people and was for sure that this one, too, would not be for me. But I agreed. We were to have coffee together on a Sunday, and dinner afterward.
I walked in to their back porch and there sat a man with gorgeous eyes, sharp features, and a silver mcdreamy streak in his dandy flop hair. I instantly melted. I knew that I couldn't look him in his eyes; I would never look away.
We drank our coffee and I soon learned that we had a lot in common! We talked about the good coffee, traveling, and lots of other things that I don't quite remember because all I could think about was how in the world I was going to convince him to ask me out on a proper date. Later that evening as I was starting to go, he asked for my number. I got home and he had texted and wanted to set up a dinner. On Monday. whew! Thank the good Lord, Jesus. but there was no way I was going to get my house in order to have someone over in 24 hours, so I opted for Tuesday. I then called all of my girl friends and had told them that I had just met the man I was going to marry. I didn't know his last name, but I knew that it would be mine.
He greeted me on Tuesday with a wine crate full of goodies and a brand new English Setter puppy. Already, who could resist? Not knowing what my kitchen was like, he brought everything needed to make a gourmet meal. I sat at my breakfast table and he set to work. He made cornmeal fritters. On top he placed shredded smoked pork, and drizzled a homemade whiskey molasses barbecue sauce. Elegantly placed on top of that was a shredded cabbage slaw and a tiny pickled okra. It was gorgeous. And delicious. We talked about dreams and journeys, music and art, good books and the best food. We shared playlists. and lets not forget the adorable sweet puppy at my feet. It was a most perfect evening.
I then called all my girl friends and confirmed, YES. it is true. I love this man. And I did love him. I loved him for the delicious meal he had just made, but also because I finally did look in his eyes. And in those eyes I saw a man that I could grow old with. A man I would sit on the porch and listen to a record and talk about life with. A man that was kind, and gentle, and loved his family, but also a man that was strong and handsome.
Fast forward to January, 2014 and I had a ring on my finger. After lots of front porch sitting, traveling with and without each other (I went back to my beloved Kenya) we both knew that we couldn't live without each other. He proposed in Asheville, North Carolina over a gorgeous meal at the restaurant Table. My best friends were waiting to celebrate with us afterward. We both wanted an outdoor wedding on the farm and didn't mind a short engagement. We married at what will soon be our farm, Heirloom and the Bird, on May 17, 2014. It was a gorgeous affair, with our friends and family from all over the U.S. celebrating with us. It truly was the best day of our life.
We are excited to share our life together, but I think right now we are most excited about sharing our creative endeavors together. I am an artist, a painter, and a teacher. He is an arborist, craftsman, and amazing cook. His family gifted us some land to live on, so we are in the process of setting up our farm and studio. Scott is building a house on the back corner, and I can't wait to one day soon live on the land that I said I DO on.
In the process of all that, we wanted a place to share what we are doing, what we are building, and what we are eating. Enjoy!
